Two Lutheran Services Carolinas (LSC) teammates were the recipients of a Bryce and Margie Hollar Scholarship to further their education and take the next step in their careers.
The Bryce and Margie Hollar Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2011 with an initial gift of $100,000 by Bryce Hollar in memory of his wife, the late Margie Hefner Hollar, and in tribute to the staff of Lutheran Home, now called Trinity Village, in Hickory which provided care for her in her final years. Later, the scholarship opportunity was expanded to all LSC teammates.
“My father first created this scholarship to honor the outstanding service, dedication and compassion Trinity Village employees provided to my mother while in their care, and, later to him as he underwent short-term rehabilitation,” Michael L. Hollar wrote in a letter to the recipients. “He later decided to expand the scholarship opportunity to all LSC employees to empower them to further their education and enhance their abilities to care for those served at LSC.”
Kelly Moore, LPN at Trinity Glen, received a $4,000 scholarship and plans to use the money to pursue her RN degree at Winston-Salem State University. She has been an LPN for 13 years and said she always had a desire to move up.
“Even though I have had opportunities as an LPN, there will be more opportunities for me as an RN. I feel I can make a better impact as a nurse, as well as become more of an asset for LSC,” she said.
Geri Harvette Singletary, a habilitation counselor at Wilson Smith Cottage received a $3,560 scholarship to attend Post University and pursue a bachelor’s degree in human services.
“I work with some of the best guys at Wilson Smith Cottage. Every day I come to work I am learning something rewarding to help me grow,” Singletary said. “I consider it a blessing to be able to work for a company that has the ability to reach so many people. I would love the opportunity to take what I have learned and practice it in other facilities with Lutheran Services Carolinas.”
After graduation, Singletary wants to continue her education and pursue a masters in counseling and human services.
